The Thrill of the (Job) Hunt

“I’m picking up your sarcasm.”

“I should hope so, because I’m laying it on pretty thick!”

I’ve been contacted a lot over the last few days to ask how I’m doing and If I’m having any luck on my job search so I thought I would make a quick update here. For those of you that don’t know, I am actively looking for a new challenge.

I’ve been on the job hunt before but it has always been a casual search. As a matter of fact, I have been casually looking for a new opportunity for a little while but didn’t plan on looking really hard until summer. That all changed with a phone call last week telling me that my job has been eliminated. It was due to a sales strategy change and nothing on my part. I can’t get into specifics but I was given a short amount of time to find something new.

Stages and Stuff

I’ve heard that there are stages people go through when something like this happens. Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, and Acceptance. I won’t go into the details of each one but I went through each of them pretty quickly. I might still be bouncing back and forth between a couple of them.

The hardest part is telling the family, because they don’t know what I have going beyond a short conversation every evening. They probably worry a little more than I do. We’re good for a while but as we all know, the hiring process sometimes runs very slowly. My main goal here is to make sure they don’t worry too much. That part is easy, while they may worry they are a great support system and give me the encouragement and motivation I need to trudge through.

The Network

I reached out a few people when it first happened to let them know and to see what is out there that may not be advertised. I have some really good leads from this but as I mentioned before, sometimes things move much slower than you want. This week I expanded my search and reached out to a few more people. If you were one of them, thank you for putting up with me being a pest but rest assured I would do the same for you if something similar happened.

I’ve said it over and over again; I love this community. I reached out to a few people to ask some questions and so far everyone has been willing to answer some questions about the company, make an introduction, or just offer support and ask what they can do. It’s been a bright spot and it really helps.

Outlook

It’s been about 10 days since I was notified and I feel better now than I did a week ago to be honest. I still don’t have any official offers yet but there is some interest from more than one company. It’s just a matter of time before an official offer comes in and I can start the decision process. For now I can afford to take some time and wait for something I really want instead of just taking something just to get a paycheck. The companies that I have talked to are great companies and the only piece missing is finding the perfect fit. This is what I love about the community. I haven’t followed a lead from a job board or career page yet. Everything in the works now has been from an introductions from my industry contacts. The process takes longer when it is a case of “we would love to have you on our team, we need to find a way to do it” as opposed to applying for a position that is already open.

So again, if you are one of the people that I reached out to and “bothered” to pull a string or two for me, THANK YOU!!! You don’t know how much it means.

If I haven’t reached out to you yet, feel free to share my About Me page and if you help line something up for me I will gladly buy you a beverage of your choice.
